TEN: An Exhibition of Contemporary Printmaking

TEN

Curated by Kristopher Hedley & Dylan McManus

Printmaking embraces the idea of the collective- whether it is a team of printers in a commercial shop or a group of artists working within the context of a studio co-op. The art form repeatedly turns to this idea of the group. TEN: A Group Exhibition of Contemporary Printmaking surveys current print based art works and reveals the spirit and group dynamic of an art form enriched with the free exchange of ideas. In the exhibit TEN we have assembled works from ten artists, each of whom are engaging contemporary printmaking practice and who have also had previous experiences working together; either through the sharing of work space or in the collaboration of concept and process. TEN both reflects the current critical concerns of contemporary print-artists and examines the dialogue and relationships manifested through the proximity of these cutting edge and dynamic artworks.

The featured artist’s include:

Vernon Byron
Robert Capozzi
Alexandra Davis
Kristopher Hedley
Beth Palmer
April Warren
Dylan McManus
Carly Still
Carlos Uribe
Ustya Tarnawsky

Capozzi: Sub-Rosa Suite in the Patterns in Practice exhibition, digital inkjet and silkscreen on paper, each 22 x 30 inches

Statement

In the Sub-Rosa Suite I explore the graphical construction of the fine art print, focusing on the pared down elements that serve as a single common denominator throughout the suite, i.e. the silkscreen linework or digital wood veneer template. This constructive approach reflects notions of Industrial Revolution methodology represented in a graphical visual form.

My images materialize through the interleaving of graphic techniques – a play between mark-making and methods of transfer. The act of drawing is my choice means to create and recreate reality, where after, I employ reproductive elements of the printmaking medium.

Conceptually, I find the term “sub-rosa” pertinent, interesting and particularly relevant in critique of contemporary politics and culture. The term sub-rosa, or “under the rose” is used in English to denote secrecy and imply covert activity.

Ecotones and Transition Zones

Hudson Valley Artists 2009

June 13 – September 6, 2009

Opening reception: Saturday June 13, 2009

Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art
State University of New York at New Paltz
New Paltz, NY 12561

Ecotones and Transition Zones

My submission to Ecotones and Transition Zones details my current investigations on challenges and reclamation of local geography of New York State’s Hudson River Valley. Through various treks, raking the riverbanks and railways of the historic river, I have accumulated a vast collection of cast offs from nature and artifacts of the Industrial Revolution. My accumulations are then considered, arranged and displayed. The videotaped process then migrates to a documentation of digital prints based on the video stills that reveal the process and patterning of my research.

Field Notes Project – Preview / Reception

April 12th, 2009

Field Notes - Preview / Reception / Raffle

Please join us for a preview, reception and raffle for the Field Notes: States of Mind collaboration project.

Saturday, April 18, 4-7pm at Barrett Clay Works, 485 Main Street, 3rd Floor, Poughkeepsie, NY

Lorrie Fredette, Laura Moriarty, Jill Parisi, Dylan McManus and Bob Capozzi

During the early half of 2009 five participants formed a collective for a project titled Field Notes. The group shares common interests related to the earth’s structure, resources, and inhabitants. They rented a 3rd floor studio space at the Barrett Clay Works, and drew numbers to establish a sequence for the project. Each artist then had one week to produce an installation, leaving behind an object in the space for the following artist to contemplate and react to.  Documentation and prints from this project will be exhibited at the upcoming Graphica Creativa Print Triennial in Jyväskylä, Finland, June 13 – September 29, 2009.

Graphica Creativa is the oldest international print exhibition in the Nordic countries, taking place in Jyväskylä, Finland every third year. The first Graphica Creativa took place in 1975. The purpose of the exhibition is to raise the standard and value of printmaking, to launch and promote printmaking itself and to increase the interest in printmaking in Finland.

Thanks to Graphica Creativa Jyväskylä has become a centre of printmaking. To carry out the project an association called The Graphica Creativa Society was formed in the 1970’s, and since then it has managed to make printmaking more known. Founded in 1978 The Centre for Printmaking offers working space to printmakers and arranges varying print exhibitions. The collection of The Association of Finnish Printmakers, which today contains nearly 4800 prints, was placed permanently in Jyväskylä in 1981.

Two exhibitions @ Southern Graphics Conference, Chicago

March 19th, 2009

I recently participated in two exhibitions at the Southern Graphics Conference in Chicago.

Global ImplicationsFriday, March 27, 5 – 8 pm

Satisfaction Town
Columbia College, Conaway Center, 1104 South Wabash Ave, ground floor

Satisfaction Town consists of the new breed of printmakers, artists, musicians, performers, poets, activists, and makers. We plan to create an interactive collaborative print environment with a parade of dimensional and flat prints.  Traditionally in museum and gallery settings, art is put on a pedestal or framed under glass, removing it from the audience. Our approach for Satisfaction Town will be interactive. We will bring the art directly to the viewer, to distance the work from this hierarchical standard. We will create an active live print space with collaborative teams handing off prints to each other and to audience members.
